CountCaddyCount Caddy helps teach kids numbers and their values. It starts off with a cute illustration of a cat and you count balls of yarn. More than just counting numbers and understanding those numbers as abstracts, I think it’s great that it shows the actual physical representation of what those numbers are. As the objects appear you drag them together into a group. ie. 5 is not just an arbitrary abstract number – it is for the 5 balls of yarn in the group. As the game goes along, it moves up to counting by twos, and then threes. I’m not an educator, but I think this is the iPhone equivalent of manipulatives at least on a preschool level.

While Zach and I really liked this game, I do have a suggestion I hope would be included in a future version. I would have liked to see it move to counting by twos quicker, or better yet give the option to skip right to it. Maybe the app could remember that you already did the first level of counting by ones and then give you the option to do that level again or skip to counting by twos right away the next time you play. Then when you’ve done the counting by twos, you can pick ones, twos or threes…etc.

But as is, I’d say the game is perfect for the under 4 crowd. With a little adjustment, I think it can hold the attention of some of the more advanced “counters” a little longer too. ;)
