pocketwallyPocket Wally Sight Words is a great educational app for the iPhone that’s aim is to help teach kids sight words. The way it works is this: you’re shown a word, it’s read out loud, then you swipe across to see and hear the word in a sentence and you are supposed to find and touch the word. The options let you choose which level of sight words to play with: Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, First, Second or Third grades. After a number of times of finding the word in the sentence you get to pick a prize/sticker and add it to your collection.

I sat with Zach and helped explain to him what he needed to do. (I think this is the one area where this game could improve – if the child doesn’t do anything after a certain amount of time, the game should have a voice-over with an explanation of what they need to do) – but sitting with him and explaining it to him worked and after a while he got the idea of how to play. He had a lot of fun with it and got so excited when he found the word(s) and was then able to pick out prizes. I think the way the game works is an excellent way of teaching kids sight words and making it fun.
